Most helpful customer reviews 12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. It's Blu-Ray and HD DVD, together at last! By Dave Angus Good Things: 1) It reads Blu-Ray and HD DVD discs. Great for a home theater or do-everything PC. HD DVD capability will be attractive to cheapskates who can buy HD movies for a fraction of the cost of Blu-Ray. 2) It does the usual stuff you'd expect, reading and writing DVD (single and dual layer) and CDROM. It rips audio CDs just fine too. 3) It claims to support Lightscribe discs, but I've never tested that. Sharpie markers are cheaper and faster. Bad Things: 1) The bundled player software is not a full version, so you may need to upgrade or buy a different program. (New versions may not support HD DVD.) 2) The first drive I got was defective... it wouldn't read Blu-Ray or HD DVDs consistently, although it read and wrote DVD just fine. The replacement works great. This is why it lost one star. 3) There can be problems if your TV and computer video card aren't HDCP compliant. Something called AnyDVD may fix that if it's legal where you are. (Cyberlink's "BD Advisor" program can check if your computer is up to the task of playing Blu-Ray content.) 4) It doesn't write Blu-Ray or HD-DVD, but who cares, since you can't afford Blu-Ray blank media yet anyway. 5) The activity LED is too bright if it's in your line of sight when watching movies. I covered it with tape. [update, August 2011] It now fails to burn dual-layer DVDs. At first I thought it was just the cheap Memorex ones, but I risked a genuine Singapore Verbatim and that failed in exactly the same way. Single-layer burns are still OK. A recently discovered Bad Thing: EAC (Exact Audio Copy) rips CDs very slowly when using this drive (and reportedly most other Blu-ray drives). It has burned DVD's without any problems. I have recently purchased Blu ray discs to try out but waiting until there's something worth copying. Software that comes with unit is decent and pretty much all you need to watch and burn. I use Media Center to watch DVD movies and use another program to copy discs. I will update this review once I burn some Blu rays; that will tell me if it was worth the price. The software bundle comes with a firmware update utility so you don't have to scour the internet for the most recent firmware. The only issue I have is that it is slow to copy Blu Ray disks with a typical time around five hours from start to finish. Gildart I bought this drive specifically for use with one of my Windows-based pcs. It works great with that, which I expected, and the windows software that comes with the drive is also wonderful and most welcome. I did not, however, expect that it would work with my Macbook 1.83 gHz Core2 Duo. My internal optical drive is dying, and while it's pretty easy to use a network drive for installs and stuff, it's definitely not as convenient to go back and forth to the other desk. The documentation and all but one of the reviews were pretty clear that this was not a Mac-friendly product, so I was pleasantly surprised when the Mighty MacBook jumped right on playing the music cd in the drive. I was even MORE surprised when it burned a DVD under the native/finder/disk burning application (no third party software involved at all). And I was elated to learn that LightScribe had free downloads for the Mac, but I didn't really expect them to work in Snow Leopard. But they do. AND it plays movies in the DVD player software. I don't know for certain whether my version of dvd player is the one that shipped with my macbook, or whether it's something that was bundled with my snow leopard disk, but movies open right up - impressively fast, as a matter of fact. 39 of 49 people found the following review helpful. Walter I will try to give anyone interested in this unit some important informa to consider. It did not work for me at all, but it might work for you. To begin the unit is marketed by JVC but I do not think it is their original product. The unit comes in a basic box with no company advertising on it. It does say JVC on the unit but on the menu screens during operation make no reference to JVC at all. It looks very much like the TASCAM Blu-Ray recorder and I would guess it is the repackaged same unit. First the unit will record to BD-R and BD-rewritable formats as well as DVD-R and RW (not DVD+R or RAM). It will read from +R discs. It is copy protected so if you think you can duplicate store bought DVDs and BDs, you can put that thought to rest....you cannot. All material must go through the HDD first. There is no direct recording to blank media. This is not a bad thing as you can do editing when the title is on the HDD. The unit has several recording modes for High Def and Standard Def. It has NO flexible bitrate modes so you must use the standard modes. For example, for HD recording it offers modes of 2 hours / 4 hours or 6 hours on a 25g disc. The times modes are the same for SD. You can do direct dubbing from a disc to HDD as long as it is copy protected. This means you can dub your TV recordings of CSI to the HDD. It will re-encode the material at the mode selected, for instance SP for 2 hours (SD). This would be a very good thing if you had commericals recorded and you wanted to remove them and then dub the edited title to another disc. You can do those kinds of edits. If your original recording had chapter marks they will appear in the same spots on the HDD dub so you can remove them and input them where you want, or delete portions of the recording, give it a title and select a thumbnail image that will appear on the final menu. These things are pretty nice options. This is where my problem with the machine came into play. First it has no COMPONENT INPUT, so for me recording HD could only be done from a HD video camera, which I do not own. My cable TV HD box has only a component output but no HD-DV output, which is what this unit requires for HD dubbing, so I could not dub recorded HD to this machine. I could have lived with that. On page 28 of the manual it gives recoding lengths for each recording mode and how they apply to each recording format. For example, if you record a title in the SP mode, which is 2 hour on standard definition 4.7g DVD-R it would translate to 10.5 hours on a 25g BD-R. To any reasonable person this would imply that this machine could actually put standard defintion on a BD-R? It cannot. If you record in standard definition you must dub it to a DVD-R or RW. It cannot be dubbed to BD-R. So why tell the buyer that you can get 10.5 hours of standard definition on a BD-R disc, when this machine cannot do it. I do not know, I tried to ask JVC and got no response. This is what happens if you try. I wanted to take all 14 Sherlock Holmes movies starring Basil Rathbone and put them on 2 BD-Rs in standard definition. Using page 28 as a guide, I did my math and they would fit easily with an hour to spare on each disc. This would be using the SP mode for standard definition. First I had to dub them from the original discs which I recorded off TCM. I had one disc per movie recorded at approximately 7.2 mb/s which is a high birate and would be re-encoded to the SP level of 5.0 but this would mean very little actual loss of image quality. The encode in real time. I did all 14. I should have done one and tested it. It would have saved me 20 hours. The actual dubbing process went smoothly and all 14 titles were nicely stored on the HDD. I haven't had a problem with it and love its performance. I've burned CDs and DVD DL discs quickly. It was extremely easy to install. Windows 7 automatically installed the drivers. The Cyberlink software is simple to install and ready to go. It doesn't use up a lot of the system when burning either. Wind As my title says, I popped this drive into my ASUS G50VT-X5 laptop. Installation was a breeze (there's a great video on YouTube. Search. You'll find it.) I removed two screws from the bottom of the laptop, slid my old drive out, removed the plastic bezel and metal guide (which has four screws) from the old one, put them on the new BD drive, and it just slid right in with no problems. Once the screws were back in place, it was secure, and Windows 7 recognized it right away. This plays Blu-ray movies with the help of some additional (not included) software. Cyberlink PowerDVD does the trick, but there are other software packages out there that will play Blu-ray Disc movies. Windows doesn't do it natively, though; You'll need additional software. The other functions all seem OK. It handles DVDs, CDs, and RWs just fine. It burns well on CD, DVD, DVD DL, and other CD or DVD media. It does not burn Blu-ray Discs, though, so be sure you're not looking for a Blu-ray burner when you get this! What more can I say? SATA has made installation incredibly easy, and everything works as advertised. If you're looking to upgrade a laptop to Blu-ray, this is probably the best deal going. Just make sure your laptop has some serious horsepower, because low-end computers can't handle processing Blu-ray movies. You need a decent CPU, a decent GPU (not a cheap GMA onboard chip) and a fair amount of RAM (by today's standards). If your computer's up to it, having BD support is pretty nice. Installed in a DELL 15R n5010 in about 15 minutes (had to swap mounting bracket and face plate) Works with win 7 ultimate x64. Has played everything so far including Avatar Blu-ray without the need for AnyDVD and also burned DVD+R DL. I have burned DVD+r and DVD+R DL with no problems, this drive is much slower than the original or the CT21N but is worth the savings. The item received was actually the CT10L which is the version with lightscribe not the CT10N and has black faceplate that does not have the lightscribe logo. This is a good deal on the product the manufacture date is June 20 2009. The CT21N is probably not worth the extra money at this time the biggest differences are that it reads burned blu-ray and has fastest read/write speeds. FYI was going to purchased from DELL they actually sell you the CT21N and was $239.00 USD plus tax and shipping. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. After installing windows 7 automatically found the drivers and it was fully functional.
