This is an internal Blu-Ray reader / DVD burner for the Powerbook, iBook G4, Mac Mini G4, and the original 17" Macbook Pro models. This drive DOES NOT burn blu-ray discs. It will read blu-ray discs. Blu-ray discs are still not officially supported under Mac OSX. Most people use this drive in combination with BootCamp or virtualization software to play Blu-Ray via Windows on your Mac which is supported. The drive does not come with any software. Most helpful customer reviews 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Problematic but resolvable By Bill I got one of these at a different vendor but thought I'd share my experiences here. I got this with the intent of installing it in a slim SATA DVD enclosure to use as a portable USB2 BD player. From the very start I had trouble getting it to even recognize BD movies. It has no problem with DVD's and CD's and shows up in My Computer as BD-ROM. I gave up for while but an upcoming trip prompted me to figure this thing out. I finally found a discussion somewhere where it was suggested the lens be thoroughly cleaned with alcohol. After a couple of gentle but increasingly vigorous scrubs, to my amazement, it worked. I played about 5 or six movies on 3 different computers without issue. Then suddenly playback began stuttering. I plugged it into the laptop where it worked the first time and, now, once again, it wouldn't even recognize BD disk's. I did a little more research and dug up a comment regarding a Sony slim BD player in which it was suggested the drive needs room to flex and that by loosening the screws holding it in place would helped it. I decided to disassemble my enclosure and plug it into the chip-set directly. Yahoo, it works again. Actually, I believe I just need to trim or file on the opening to allow for the drawer/sliding mechanism to operate more freely. There is a lot of discussion about updating firmware and installing UDF drivers (especially for XP), but my feeling is it's mostly mechanical. Optics need to be as clean as possible and disk needs to spin as freely as possible. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The original drive ceased to work just after a few months of use back in 2008. It proved almost impossible to find back then. I found it a few weeks ago here on Amazon and I ordered it. I have to say it is working perfect, just like it should. The only drawback was that the drive did not come with the promised software but I don't need it since it was recognized instantly by the OS and to play Blu Ray all I needed was not use the software that came with the computer. Least Expensive Slim BD Solution You Can Get By Ted Hancock Works well in my custom built HTPC with a slim bay. Haven't tried writing, but that's not what an HTPC is supposed to do anyway. Hall This enclosure provides a simple way to make use of that internal drive that you replaced with an upgrade or salvaged from an retired computer. In my case, I had bought a new computer, and had a DVD-R drive left over that I wanted to use with my office computer, which only had a CD drive. When this enclosure arrived, it came with clear instructions for opening the case and installing the drive. Everything fits together nicely and the case has a small fan, on/off switch and power light, too. The case may be used with any 5.25" full-size HD, CD, or DVD drive. Use it as an external drive on my Mac Pro. Does a super job on discs with no frisbees. Caveat: Blu-Ray discs must be immaculate when you go to burn them. By David Mootoo If your DVD/Blu Ray/DivX/mp3 library is ANYTHING like mine, you've crossed well over into your neighbour's backyard when it comes to storing DVD disks and your mp3 collection can't fit onto 4 of those Apple iPod 120GB classics. So, this is the next best thing - Blu Ray disks at 25 or 50 GB per disk.Blu Ray Playback: You will need DIGITAL video outputs for video playback, such as HDMI or DVI, or even the mini-versions of each. If your pc is equipped with the good old-fashioned SVGA output - you won't be able to play any of those Blu Ray movies on your pc. However, when hooked up in a pc which has even a 720p monitor connected via HDMI, it plays video flawlessly.Blu Ray recording: If you are planning on burning copies of Blu Ray movies, you have a LOT of work to do. After all, just like when DVDs first came out, Blu Ray movies are encrypted and cannot be burned with the software that ships with it or even Roxio or Nero. Most helpful customer reviews 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Fast, solid, but temperamental with Win7 By Scott I got this to use on both my laptop running win7 64bit and my imac. I purchased an external sata/usb case to make this an external drive since I don't have drive bays. It works on an imac but only for read/write. On the win machine I can watch movies and burn Blu-Ray and DVD/CD-r's. The initial install of the drive's included software was a little disastrous. After the install the drive wasn't recognized. With some online research I found that the Cyberlink PowerDVD 9 was outdated in every way so I had to purchase an upgrade to version 10. Once I did that things worked much better. I still find that after my computer boots, if the drive isn't recognized all I need to do is turn off the power on the drive box and then turn it back on and things work. The drive is a 10X Blu-Ray so it burns fairly fast although I've only used 4x discs. It burns cd's and DVD's super fast too. This drive is also capable of doing LightScribe but there aren't any logos on the face or anything in the manual. Its a quiet drive for the most part but sometimes will rev-up like a jet engine. My biggest gripe with the drive is that it was an OEM and was packaged in a ziplock style bag. Amazon surprisingly packed this terribly loose in the box but luckily there were other items with it to keep it from swimming in the box. Unreliable! By AsiancCharm Two weeks ago, I bought 5 spindles of Memorex BD-Rs to burn blu-ray movies. The first two spindles worked like a charm! however, starting with the third spindle, all hell broke lose: some discs failed to burn entirely, and some discs got burned but wouldn't play on regular blu-ray players. Worst, after 10 discs or so, the LD Blu-ray rom stopped working. The unit would play CDs, DVDs, and blu-rays, and burn CDs and DVDs, but it absolutely wouldn't burn any blu-ray discs (any brand). Called the tech support at LD, and the guy told me to stay away from Memorex BD-R discs because they are known to destroy LD Blu-ray roms! On the same day after my LG blu-ray rom stopped burning Memorex BD-Rs, I went to a local electronic store to buy another blu-ray rom because I needed to finish the project I started earlier. As soon as I finished installing the new HP blu-ray writable rom, I immediately inserted an empty Memorex BD-R to burn the same project that I failed earlier. Guess what, it burnt without a hitch! Subsequently I sent the old LG blu-ray rom back to the Manufacturer for a warranty exchange. As soon as I got the replacement LG rom, I took out the HP rom, and installed the new LG rom. Guess what, this time I put in a Kodak BD-R, and it burnt without any problem as well. However, as soon as I put in a second Kodak BD-R, the project was burning okay for awhile, then the speed got slower and slower, eventually it completely stopped at 75%. Boy oh boy, was I mad!! I immediately called LG tech support. LG again told me that Kodak BD-R brand (made by Phillips) was also no good for LG blu-ray rom. Then, I asked what brand he did recommend. He said brands like Mitsibishi, Vebatim. As soon as I finished the call, I re-installed the HP rom, and it has been burning all kind of discs without any problem whatsoever: Kodak, Imation, Memorex, Inland Pro-HT, etc. What is the moral of the story? By Christopher T Roberts At first impression, this drive appears to work quite well - it is very thin and light. It works with Windows 7, plug and play for DVDs and CDs - just plug it in and pop in a disk. I have not used it to write any DVDs or CDs yet, but have used it to load software from DVD and play Blu-Ray disks It comes with 2 installation CDs - - Encina CD Maker - I'd suggest skipping this install - I find it easier to use Windows to write data CDs and DVDs which is all it does. - Cyberlink Blu-ray Disk Suite - This is required to play BluRay disks, and appears to allow building of video DVDs, including a simple movie composer.. This is absolutely worth installing. Be patient, the installation took a long time for me. I'm using this with a new Dell Inspiron 11 11.6-Inch Obsidian Black Laptop (Windows 7 Premium) Which comes with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. As I mentioned, I haven't run into any incompatabilities, and haven't run into any problems yet with power consumption or trouble with any transfer rate on the disks. It works out of the box as just a CD/DVD rom. Just plug and play. You need to install the drivers for other functionalities like playing BluRay disks. As stated by other reviewers, playing BluRay disks needs more computer power than playing regular DVDs so expect issues with lesser computers like netbooks. In fact, the Velocity VMbludrive works perfectly well with my desktop running Vista. It also worked fine with my Asus netbook running Windows 7 Home premium, except for playing BluRay. The device comes with a software (BD advisor) that will check your system for minimum requirements to play BluRay. I ran BD advisor on my netbook and it detected a few incompatibilities, including CPU power (my netbook runs an Atom 270 1.6ghz; I have 2 GB of ram). Overall, this is a very good external CD/DVD player/burner and BD player (the cheapest external BD player I came across), except if you only intend to use it with a netbook in which case you might not be able to use it as a BD player. The drive is extremely cool -- you'd never know there was a HDD inside! But this is due to a really noisy fan. The fan really pulls the air through, but resonates with the case. I have the enclosure resting on a piece of foam on the carpet, but the noise still drives us nuts. I have to hold the case in my hand to get it to quiet down. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Does not work with Blu-ray drives, noisy. By Ruined This enclosure has three issues. The primary issue is that it apparently does not work with Blu-ray drives as advertised. My Blu-ray drive is an LG GGC-H20L and though the enclosure is detected, the drive itself goes unrecognized when this enclosure is plugged in. A previous review also mentions a Blu-ray burner not working. Some USB 3.0 chipsets do not work with Blu-ray, and my guess is that this is one of them despite the specs advertised. Secondly, it is noisy. However, this can be fixed in two ways; first, you can simply unscrew the fan and buy/install rubber O rings between the screws and the enclosure. Or, if you are using an optical drive you may even be able to unplug the fan if you don't need the cooling. The fan itself is not loud, just without the O rings installed it reverberates the aluminum enclosure. Third, it isn't that steady vertically as there is no stand, and there are no rubber feet (again, you could install them yourself) so it slides around even horizontally. Overall, this package seems to have been slapped together with little regard for the end user experience. It is unfortunate that a Blu-ray enclosure that supports USB 3.0 is so hard to find, but this enclosure is another miss for said purpose even if you are comfortable modifying the unit for its shortcomings. Nice price, but it just doesn't work at all for Blu-ray and for other applications requires user modifications for acceptable performance. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Mess of an NOISY enclosure By treMMor On the plus side it's USB 3.0 and 5.25" but that's where the plusses end. I'd advise a pass on this cheap non-bargain because it didn't work for me correctly with the BluRay burner I installed in it, but honestly even if it had worked perfectly it still would have been returned because this thing is extremely noisy. The fan is a little loud on it's own but when installed on the cheap chassis (which doesn't have rubber/padded feet or anything to dampen vibration) and that little fan will vibrate the whole unit so much that the sound produced from the unit as a whole is completely unacceptable (and I'm not that sensitive to noisy peripherals and I think this is the first time I've had a serious noise issue with any peripheral). Jones I discovered that this drive has "compatibility issues" with some 2x blank 25gb BD-R disks. And, it was for this reason that I returned it to the seller. Although, I did not keep the drive long enough to verify this, I was told by at least one diskette manufacturer (TW-USA) that this drive has no problem burning its 4x blu-ray media, but just will not work with its 2x BD-R disks. By Geoff P I purchased this Blu-Ray combo drive to replace the DVD burner in my ASUS G51Jx. The most difficult part was removing the faceplate from the drive so I could use the one that is contoured to my laptop. One important thing to note is that if you do not already have a Blu-Ray drive on your system, you will probably have to purchase Blu-Ray player software before you can use the device for Blu-Ray movies. Windows XP, Vista, nor 7 does not have the CODECs for playing Blu-Ray movies. Actually CT30N now By Arpeaoh I guess the CT30N is the newest drive that replaces the CT21N. The drive is a flawless replacement for the OEM drive in my Acer Aspire 7535 with Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium. The drivers installed automatically and without issue. Swapping the face plates takes longer than installing the drive, drivers, and player software combined. Nice Upgrade Drive from Samsung By Gus Peterson I have always been a fan of Samsung's products and ordered this drive as an upgrade to the old DVD-ROM that I had in my MPC Millennia system from a couple of years ago. As always, Amazon got the drive to me very quickly and while this is an OEM drive, Amazon has it packaged in it's own box which is better than I have seen from their competitors. The drive installed easily and works very nicely. I haven't tried the Lightscribe functionality yet but I am sure that it will work fine. Samsung did a really nice job designing this drive. The bezel is very nice looking, much better than just a plain black front. The software that comes with the drive seems to be very robust. I like the BD advisor which basically will look at your system and tell you if you are capable of runn Blu-Ray. That's cool, especially for users who may not be as familiar with the different technologies. For under $100 this is a great drive for an upgrade in an older system or for people building new systems. I am sure with a brand new system build, this drive will perform at an even higher level as the memory and CPU will push it to the max. Zarev Pro: The Samsung Blu-Ray Internal SATA Drive with Lightscribe SH-B083L is overall a very good Drive. Blue Ray playback is excellent. The standard DVD playback is superior to my Toshiba stand alone player with HDMI connection. I have Samsung HD DLP TV. Installation was very easy. Con: No SATA cables included. It comes with an old Power DVD8 software version, which after all updates can not play 100% new Blue Ray discs like 2012 or AVATAR. Gervais first i want to say this order came in in 2 day's from the time i ordered it the packaging was great the drive came in nicely protected box. i put it in my computer, installed the power DVD suite that came with it updated the firmware then i even went to Cyberlink to upgrade to power DVD10 $65.00 i was all excited put a Blu-ray in title came up all looked good then hit play error came up 0024 then it wanted me to update i hit OK then it said successful then a new window opened saying can't play this format. so i went to Cyberlink looking for a patch thinking hoping to find a patch that will fix it. Found the latest patch, tried again same thing then i thought it may be the region setting. I checked in device manager made sure I was in U.S.A. region went to the settings in power DVD the region was good. I played that same Blu-Ray DVD on a different computer and it played flawlessly then i thought it was my PC may be it doesn't support this drive but every thing looked good. I was stumped! I Google this dive to make sure Windows7 62 bit what i could find said that it supported it. The next day i tried installing it on a different computer same thing I downloaded ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre 3 Platinum (thinking maybe it was CyberLink) opened it hit play and it wouldn't even play. so after 2 nights fighting I'm returning it for a replacement. Hopefully I will not have the same problem with a replacement one. If this next one dose the same thing i will get a Lite-on because i know that one works it just doesn't write. I will keep you posted just one more small note i did the BD adviser from cyberlink everything came in Green that's why i think it's the drive. here is an update i received a replacement drive same one Samsung Blu-Ray Internal SATA Drive with Lightscribe SH-B083L/RSBP (Black) in put it in installed and played perfect the replacement came in in two days, again the packaging was great i love
