Use it as an external drive on my Mac Pro. Does a super job on discs with no frisbees. Caveat: Blu-Ray discs must be immaculate when you go to burn them. Leave unburned discs in the cake box and do NOT handle the surface under any circumstances. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. that new upgrade smell.... By David Mootoo If your DVD/Blu Ray/DivX/mp3 library is ANYTHING like mine, you've crossed well over into your neighbour's backyard when it comes to storing DVD disks and your mp3 collection can't fit onto 4 of those Apple iPod 120GB classics. So, this is the next best thing - Blu Ray disks at 25 or 50 GB per disk.Blu Ray Playback: You will need DIGITAL video outputs for video playback, such as HDMI or DVI, or even the mini-versions of each. If your pc is equipped with the good old-fashioned SVGA output - you won't be able to play any of those Blu Ray movies on your pc. However, when hooked up in a pc which has even a 720p monitor connected via HDMI, it plays video flawlessly.Blu Ray recording: If you are planning on burning copies of Blu Ray movies, you have a LOT of work to do. After all, just like when DVDs first came out, Blu Ray movies are encrypted and cannot be burned with the software that ships with it or even Roxio or Nero. While I cannot give more details here, rest assured, that it CAN BE DONE. You CAN backup your movies using this drive, but you need OTHER software to accomplish this feat.Burning Blu Ray disks are basically the same process like burning a DVD, except that it takes MUCH longer to do so - up to 30 minutes based on whether you are using hi-speed 8X, dual-layer blanks and of course, the speed of your hard drive. Mine coughed out a 50GB rewritable disk in 45 minutes, while ripping a Blu Ray disk took just over 1 hour to an external USB 2.0 hard drive.Installation: If you have EVER installed a CD or DVD drive, then you can install this drive with no problems. As for the firmware update problem I have seen some users having, I have not updated mine, maybe that is one of the reasons for such long read/write times, but it works flawlessly.NOTES: If you do plan on buying this drive, note that Blu Ray blanks are still ridiculously expensive, unless you buy some no-name media from China, but the printed manual which came with the drive stated that LG, Sony and Panasonic blanks (Maxell BD RE, if you are really trying to push it) are the most compatible with this drive, so be warned! I have only tried Panasonic and my test disk is a Maxell dual layer rewriteable, so I haven't had any problems with this drive so far.Yes, I would recommend this drive to anyone thinking about getting their feet wet in the world of Blu Ray. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Not much to say, it works as advertised By Tech Addict I purchased this burner for my new gaming system and I have no complaints. It runs quietly while working and the software that comes with it is pretty good. Sorry I can't say more but I've only owned it for about a month. See all 3 customer reviews...
