I have a Toshiba notebook that is fast enough to play blue ray, but wasn't sure if this drive will work. In the end ...this drive worked quite nicely. The order came packaged with the drive only. It lacked software and drivers. I removed the old cd-rom drive (it only takes one screw on the bottom of the notebook) to remove my old cd-rom drive. I had to take the fastener of the old drive and place it in the new drive. It fit perfectly in the slot and the sata connection. I also carefully snapped off the face plate of the Sony drive and replaced it with the Toshiba face plate which gave the drive a flush finish on the notebook. It fit perfectly. I guess all slim type drives are standard. Once installed, the bios recognized the blu ray burner as did Window's 7 64bit home edition. The drivers were installed automatically. If you didn't know already, Window's 7 has the drivers for blu ray players, but won't natively play blu ray (through Media Player) disk because Microsoft lacks the license from Sony to play a blu ray disk. In order to play or burn blu ray, you need a third party program such as Cyberlink power Dvd (blu ray playing software) or Adobe Premiere Elements 8 (blu ray disk movie making software). This drive isn't a speed demon, but it is faster than most stand alone blu ray players. In summary, before you buy this drive, make sure you have the processor, memory, and driver requirements to play blu ray disk before you try this drive. Quality BluRay Burner/Reader: Sony Optiarc 5730S Ranks As The No.1 Slim BluRay Drive At Amazon By Wavey Davey I'd like to start off this review by saying this: If you are in the market for a replacement 12.7mm Slim BluRay Writer for a valued notebook that you own, or are repairing/upgrading, do not waste your time shopping around for something better than this one because this is the top of the mark! It's a little "pricey" here at Amazon, but I could not find it cheaper elsewhere, so I went with the buy at Amazon, with my favored PRIME shipping for free/gratis, and have been happy with the buy ever since I opened the OEM box. The drive ships in a nice, and sturdy slim-DVD drive container, cradled in a black foam holder system inside the box for protection from shock and impacts during shipping, and it worked a treat for my particular shipment. Basically, if your notebook supports this form factor, the install is plug and play, with the only caveat being you will most likely need to *remove* the support bracket off the present DVD drive and install it on the Optiarc drive before you install it, otherwise it simply will not bolt into your chassis and stay there in the correct orientation. I might also suggest that *before* you buy this drive for your notebook that you first to to CyberLink's web site and download their BluRay Checker which has a catchy name, that I can't recall offhand, but go there and download their software/hardware checker to make certain that your particular notebook can support a BluRay player or burner, and if it will support playback of BluRay movies, both normal and 3D! If you fail to do this step, you are going to be chancing the fact that not all notebooks are created equal, and it takes a certain combination of CPU, RAM, and motherboard to make BluRay work, ie not all notebooks will qualify for a BluRay player, much less a BluRay burner like the Optiarc 5730S. So do that step 1st thing before you even entertain installing something like this, then buy it if the software says that your notebook is compatible with BluRay

The installation was as easy as plugging the cables in and screwing the drive in the bay. No drivers no nothing it works right out of the box and comes with all cables required. I already had Power DVD Deluxe, so all I needed to do was reboot the system and I was good to go. For those of you who do not have HD or Blu-ray software, it comes in the box as well (Power DVD, Power Producer, Power2Go, Instant Burn, Power Backup and BD Advisor) One of the easiest installations I've done. Works for my blu-ray, NOT my DVD/RW By Amazoned I bought this to house my internal Lenovo Multi III DVD/RW (Panasonic UJ890). It couldn't be recognized when connecting through USB ports of my Thinkpad, or another desktop. However, if I put my blu-ray player (Panasonic UJ240) in this enclosure, then it's recognized and working!! My other external encloser is from JacobsParts, and it works for both blu-ray/DVD-RW drive and DVD/RW drive. So it's quite weird for me. This just might be that I have a (semi) bad enclosure circuit board. But for now I'll just swap my existing enclosure and use this to house my blu-ray burner/player (Panasonic UJ240). It did not fit my drive as advertised even though I checked to make sure it was compatible with my model. There were no installation instructions at all. When powered up it would allow my drive to "take" a CD but not eject it! When I checked the company's website it refers me to a support phone number. When I called the number it referred me back to the worthless website! Emailing the company was no help at all. Unable to get it to work at the moment By natedog Looks good, fits my drive (CD/DVD-RW from HP laptop, working fine until in the laptop) just fine, seems pretty sturdy in overall design (note, is plastic case), but when I plug in the drive to my computer it will not open CDs/DVDs (initially reads drive as there, but when try to use drive it will continue to spin up drive over and over and then the computer no longer recognizes a drive is connected). One exception is the driver CD that came with the product (this would work, but it only has drivers for windows 98 and did not fix my problem on windows vista). I wouldn't recommend the included software for burning -- ImgBurn works MUCH better and is easier to use -- plus, it's free. 12 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Good, but ... By SM I've had this drive for two months now on a Windows 7 64-bit. Worked beautifully for laying blu-ray disks. (Haven't tried burning BD.) However I did a firmware update (that the LG software suggested and did automatically) and now the eject button doesn't open the tray. Windows "My Computer" doesn't even have it as part of the installed devices. So what do I say? As an old Mac user this is all new to me; but I hear that this type of thing is par for the course in Windows. If I find a solution (which I sure hope since I can't play any blu-ray right now) I'll post it. The included software from Cyberlink isn't much to write home about. Although you can do the basic things with it. Update on firmware travails: Spoke to LG. Turns out their R&D knew that the firmware that they had pushed was bad and could make the drive unusable. But what kind of idiotic organization keeps pushing it after they know it's bad?! Aaaargh. At least they were decent enough to let me exchange. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. By Peter Mattsson I got this because the not-so-super "Superdrive" on both my Macbook and iMac died (OK the computers are both over 3 years old now, but still). The price of this product was less than the repair shop charges to even look at your Mac. I plugged it in. The Macs both instantly recognized it (this may not be the case if you didn't already have a DVD drive; I don't know). When I want to burn a DVD, the Mac asks me which drive I want to use. I have burned about 50 back-ups of music and movies and not one coaster yet (equal credit must be given to the Verbatim brand discs, which are the best). I like the fact that it's USB powered; heaven knows I don't need another bulky AC adapter. I plugged the cable in to my powered USB hub and it works like a charm. None of the awful "groaning" noises my Mac's drive used to make, even when functioning "properly". I own more than 11 bd-r burners connected to the same computer. Sata all of them. I have lite on 12x, lg 8x, lg 10x and this pioneer drive. I get this drive only for having maximum media compatibility, some units will not recognize certain brands of bd-r media. since i live in Venezuela and here you have to buy the media that is at the moment available on the market the is not plenty of brands to choose from. I coneccted the drive to my super tower generic crappy case and started testing. The drive is a bit longer than LG Electronics 10X Blu-ray SATA Writer Drive with Software WH10LS30K - Bulk (Black), but a lot smaller than LG Electronics 8X Blu-ray SATA Writer Drive WH08LS20 (Black). So it can be used on small sized minitowers with reduced space inside. My objective is to use the 11 burners in the tower to burn simultaneously 11 different iso images. For feeding this data hungy units i have two Sans Digital TowerRAID TR8M-B 8 Bay SATA to eSATA Port Multiplier JBOD/RAID 0, 1, 1+0, 5 Enclosure (Black) with 16 Hitachi Deskstar 3.5-Inch 2TB 7200RPM SATA II 32MB Cache Internal Hard Drive 0S02861inside of them. One rack have a raid 5 array using 8 disks 2 tb each (About 14 tb usable space), and the other one is using 8 individual 2tb disks in jobd raid mode. This unit give me a huge surprise because simply Outperforms all my other drives by 2.5 times. using the same media in all my drives the lg ones and the lite on one can reach a maximum of 4x burning speed (on 4x labeled bd-r media). This pioneer beast burns at 10x speed on 4x media disks. I dont know how the drive do this, but certainly do it, and works!!! If you need productivity and speed is important to you, buy this drive now! Im using imgburn software and the drive firmware havent been updated (what i should even try to update the firmware with such performance?)! (latest img burn version, but old ones works fine as well) I burn currently around 500 bd-r disks PER WEEK. And this is a bulletproof unit! For reaching such high burning speeds you MUST use a dedicated hard drive to store the iso image to be burned on each bd-r drive. Forget about on the fly copy from another bd-r drive if you want to burn at speeds higher than 4x. Or you will loose a lot of blank media. Past week i ordered two more of this drives to replace two of my 8x lg burners, they still works great but the pioneer performance exceded all my expectations by far! i will sell the lg ones. In order to connect 11 burners to the computer you MUST buy 4 port pci-X controllers. Go with the cheap ones non raid or software raid based, like Syba, Ultra, and other brands. Forget hardware based RAID controllers with 6,8,12,16 or 24 ports since they DO NOT recognize optical atapi drives, only hard drives. I buy a 800$ 24 Channel Raid Controller only to find out this :-( . at leats i use this beast now for the raid arrays now. Forget conecting more than 2 blu ray burners to your mother board and use them simultaneusly, the cheap board controllers apparently have some type of bottleneck in the bus and the drives will not achieve even 4x each. I own a msi k9a2 platinum board (by the way, i know its old). Also forget to use pci (non pci-x) sata controllers. The bus wouldnt allow you to use more than 3 drives simultaneusly at 4x each (or two at 6x, or one at 12x). If you try with 4 units the burning speed will drop to 0.8x in each unit, i suppose this is caused by some tipe of collapse, bottleneck or overflow in the controller. I tried 3 different brands of pci controllers. The issue is the bus, PCI doesnt allow such transfer rates, go with pci-x. This drive worths every penny you paid for it. i will buy this unit from now on even the price be twice the other units. I havent tried 3D 50 gb DL bd-r media on it yet. Works for me (mostly) By nlel1975 I bought one of these Blu-Ray slimline external writers from someone in China on eBay. The drive is basically a Panasonic UJ-230A slimline sata laptop drive in an external usb 2.0 casing. I have tested my drive under Windows 7 and it works with only 1 USB cable connected (although it comes with 2 usb cables in case you need more power). It plays back Blu-Ray perfectly on both the Windows 7 machines I tried it on, one was a 2.66ghz iMac (running Windows 7) the other was an Acer 1810tz notebook. The only issue with this drive from my testing so far is that it cannot recognise some 4 year old -R or -RW DVD discs (which work in another drive). If you use +R +RW or +R DL DVD discs it recognises them fine and they work, I have yet to burn a Blu-Ray as I have no discs yet but I am confident there will be no problems there, the drive does recognise all pressed DVDs no problem its just the -R or -RW discs it does not like. NOT a Blu-ray player but an Okay external Blu-ray drive By A. Dent First, it should be understood that this is not a Blu-ray player. This is an external optical drive that reads Blu-ray discs and can read and write DVD discs. It will NOT play Blu-ray movies unless you have a Blu-ray player software installed on your computer. These being said, what my computer believes it's a "MATSHITA BD-CMB UJ141AL 1001 10091400" turned out to be quite a decent external drive. The plastic enclosure is reasonably sturdy but the disc tray needs to be treated gently when opened - it's probably easy to break but it's no worse than the disc trays that are part of any brand-name laptop internal DVD drive. The drive is powered through one or 2 USB 2.0 ports and the 2 cables are included. I was able to operate the drive while powered through one USB port only. I am not using the drive to play Blu-ray movies but, given that it was able to read Blu-ray discs reliably, I assume that it should play movies with the proper software. On a Windows 7 machine the drive was recognized and could be used immediately and I suspect that all Windows XP or later machines should have no problems. There drive comes with a CD to install the drive on Windows 98 computers. As for the manual, I don't understand why they didn't use Google's free auto-translate service. The output would have been a lot better than "damager caused by unauthorized repairs are not included within the guarantee period and they are subject to be charged" or "please do not place the driver under easy pressure to guarantee the proper operation of the drive." By the way, the reference to 'guarantee' above does not mean that a warranty is actually provided because I couldn't find any warranty statement. I am a semi-professional videographer and I record some of my shoots/subjects/videos in High-Definition. At one point earlier this year, I realized that burning to DVDs just will not be enough for HD content - the 4-something gigabytes just won't cut it. I decided to get DIGISTOR's blu-ray burner because I got one of their their DVD burners as well - External USB 2.0 Powered 8x DVD Burner by DIGISTOR - and I saw from their website -[...]/Blu-ray-burner - that they had a similarly designed Blu-Ray burner. The reason I was so happy with the DVD burner was that it did not need a power cord for it. I am happy to say that this Blu-Ray burner is the same - no power cord. I use it for my HD video editing, connected to my PC. I also bring it around, it is very light and portable, on my shoots should there be a need to burn output onsite. It's plug-and-play, no need for drivers - Vista and Windows 7 supports blu-ray natively. And I have yet to encounter a bad burn on this drive. Razon When I first saw this unit, I have second doubts getting it. I make a lot of short films for myself and for my family and friends but I need something to burn it in HD quality video. A AVCHD-DVD is too short and it has a small capacity to make one in a DVD-R. I heard good things about blu-rays and people are eager to know if the Macbook Pro can support the hardware. Luckily I got this one, tried on my Macbook Pro.... VIOLA! It worked! I used Roxio Toast Titanium Pro for burning BD-R with my Macbook Pro. On my netbook, the device worked (and I was using Windows XP Pro!). I can burn files and read them from the unit. The disadvantage of burning files from my netbook to the blu-ray is it takes more time to burn them on disc. Never thought it took me more than an hour and a half to burn on a 25gb 4x BD-R (using the latest Nero Burning software, I forgot the version number) But still, it was worth it! By Mr. Blue For those that are used to using the combination of "AnyDVD by Slysoft" and "DVDShrink 3.2" to backup dvd's and are curious if there are similar steps for doing this with blu-rays. IT IS. Unfortunately there is no "dvdshrink 3.2 for blu-ray disks". There are several other methods that are very effective. I searched for a long time to find out this stuff so read carefully. In general, what I do with this drive, is backup my blu-ray movies to an external hard drive, then stream them to my 52 inch samsung from my laptop using its HDMI port(which doesn't even have a blu-ray drive. If this sounds like something your trying to do then read on. If not, you should highly consider it. Using AnyDVDHD by Slysoft first insert the blu-ray movie, right click the AnyDVD icon and click "Rip Video DVD to Harddisk". After that go to the directory in which you ripped the DVD to Then Locate the correct .m2ts file that contains the movie (BDMV/STREAM). An .m2ts file for dummy's is the blu-ray version of an .vob file. So usually the largest .m2ts file is the movie. You can run .m2ts files as video files through Nero v8 Showtime. Once you find the main movie .m2ts files (usually about 25 gigs). Locate another freeware program called TsRemux. This is just like DVDshrink 3.2 in the way that it can stream out unnecessary content (subtitles/foreign languages). Through TsRemux open up the .m2ts file that you have determined is the movie. Then you will see the extra contents. Select the first video stream, the first audio stream, and the first subtitle stream (they are usually the English ones, sometimes you may have to re-do this to locate the correct sound, but there should only be ONE OF EACH selected). Make sure you click the box about where the streams are that says "Blu-Ray TrueHD to .....". Click "remux" and viola What was a 25 gig movie file should now only be about 15 gigs. NOTE**** Right now it is WAY more cost efficient to back up your blu-rays to an external hard drive than to re-burn them onto a blu-ray disk. Disks average at about 25 dollars each. That's about eight movies for 200 dollars right? A 320 gig e.xternal will run you just as much as eight blu-ray disks but can fit 21 movies (at 15 gigs each). I had read all of the reviews for the LG Blue-ray Burner Drive, and there were enough positives to outweigh the negatives so I bought it; but I still expected headaches Pleasantly, I have been surprised. The drive easily inserted into my computer's (HP M9040N)spare drive bay. The cables provided with the drive connected the power to my computer's spare plug and inserted easily into a spare SATA port on the motherboard. From there, I powered up and Vista quickly recognized the drive and installed the drivers. My keyboard quick buttons for open and close of the spare bay worked instantly. I opened my Pinnacle Studio 12 software to a family video project I had set up the day I ordered the new blue-ray drive. I then went to the Make Movie tab on my software and the new drive was recognized. I had 23 gigabytes of AVCHD video edited and prepared for DVD authorizing, so I started the Make Movie process and away it went. I was needing a way to make backup copies of my purchased Blu-ray movies for the kids because they were constantly losing them or getting them scratched up. I connected it to my Dell Studio 1749 laptop, via my USB hub because I have several other external drives connected simultaneously. I also connected the separate AC power adapter that was included with the Blu-ray writer. The next thing I did was download and install a trial version of separate software to enable me to make backup copies of Blu-ray discs (I only used the trial version of the software until I found out it worked for sure, then I was more than happy to purchase the full version of the software ($60) in order to backup all my Blu-ray discs in the future). Next, I used the Blu-ray writer with the separate software I downloaded to create a Blu-ray disc image file (iso) of a Blu-ray disc I wanted to make a backup copy of. I saved the Blu-ray disc image file (.iso) on one of my external hard drives until I got a blank Blu-ray disc to burn it on. Since I also received the Optical Quantum 25GB 4X BD-R Logo Top Spindle - 25 pcs for Christmas, I had to convert the Blu-ray disc image file to fit on a 25GB blank Blu-ray disc, which was one of the options I selected before I created the Blu-ray disc image file. After I got finished creating the Blu-ray disc image file on my external hard drive, all I did was insert one of the Optical Quantum 25GB 4X BD-R Logo Top Spindle - 25 pcs in the Buffalo Blu-ray Writer and the rest was history! It worked perfectly, but took several hours to copy/write because it's not near as fast as a DVD writer, but this should be expected due to the huge amount of data that is required for the Blu-ray discs. I'm not complaining about the speed, because the backup I made works great on my Blu-ray player in the living room! 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful Mostly good...software mostly bad By Jimmy Dean I've used this Writer for several BD-RE 50G discs now and I can say that I am generally happy. The Verbatim discs burn around 3.1x avg and as high as 4.2x (Imgburn) which is better than the advertised 2x. I am glad they sent me an external power supply as the chargeable port I use on my laptop is just short in the supplied power. The blue light lights just a bit brighter with the supply. It uses the Sony drive so I know it comes from the source of Blu-ray and isn't a knock-off of some kind. The outside black housing is just right and was exactly as the picture shows. It is sturdy and put together well with the connections on the back. It can even be tethered to a cord for security. Now the software that was supplied is partially okay. The turboUSB really makes a difference. Without it, it maxs out at 09x. So you have to install it or you could wait practically forever for a large burn. As mentioned above, Imgburn reported an average of 3.1x and has gone up from there at points. Impressive! The Cyberlink software is marginal at best for blu-ray. Most of the functions require an upgrade and the PowerDVD software fails at running it and selecting menu items. I have an on-going ticket with Cyberlink right now (Buffalo didn't want to touch this issue which is fine.) but I am not confident in the resolve because I hardly think they could do anything concidering it is very old software (3 yrs) and there are no updates to speak of available. Fortunately I use other software to burn and encode my blu-rays and will not probably use the Cyberlink software for anything anyway. It's just too bad I have a whole suite that is defective at the core product. As far as firmware or driver updates: nadda Windows7 is using a 2006 driver build (way before Windows7 was released) and it recognises it fine but you'd think it would update for 64-bit or

If you create videos in a 2011 video camera, it is probably in the AVCHD format that is not mac compatible. By moving your files to an SD card you insert SD memory cards (with high-def AVCHD files) into the burner. Stick in a disc, DVD or Blue Ray. It does not matter for the playback quality, as it retains the format and high quality HD video in AVCHD on each disk medium. The only difference is that it might put the file is set on two DVDs instead of a blu-ray as the latter has a higher capacity. It claims to be able to record standard def, but it wont down convert AVCHD to Standard def formats. The aluminum body dissipates heat, the chamber is still cool to touch, even after 2.3 hours of operation. The blue light indicates the unit is turned on and very bright in a dark room, but it helps you because you are to turn it off if they do not need to use. Data transfer is very fast, nothing to appeal. The thing I most appreciate it, that it uses a regular power cord. Perhaps you want for the external DVD-RW drives, USB works on your netbook or laptop, so you do not have to go with the extra power cable a lot. This is the best album I have seen on the market today. It seems to be compatible with all drives (no coasters yet). The unit is quiet, easy to install (depends on your knowledge of PC hardware and installation) and easy to configure. The software to record and watch movies included. Mine came with a free BD-R to start. Make sure your PC the right hardware to go with HD or the unit is not for you. Depending on what video editing software you have, after burning the video to disc, the video quality is great! All my disks in my standalone player and my PS3 Slim. (Pleasant surprise). The software is CyberLink PowerDVD 8 (a BlueRay disk), with a number of other pieces of software CyberLink (Director, LabelPrint, MediaShow 4, Power2Go, PowerBackup, and PowerProducer YouCam) After installation, the software allows you to play BlueRay movies (tested with Quantum of Solace). It also comes with a SATA cable, 4 case screws and a SATA cable to molex power converter, and a real manual. OEM is a very complete package. Yes, this is compatible with Mac by Brandon Edling I bought this hoping it would be a good addition to my Mac mini ... does not play Blu-ray, but the RIP MKV files (with MakeMKV). Fortunately, it works great! Not only is the configuration of crazy stupid easy (a Y cable ... two USB ports on the mini, mini-USB drive), but no software to begin with, the drive is recognized immediately and you can start reading the discs. Again, this is not to watch movies directly from Blu-ray on the Mac - Blu-ray is still a "bag of pain," Jobs said, so until Apple makes the operating system, which will be a short trip. But if you want to rip Blu-Ray for Mac (and use AirVideo MakeMKV or to view / convert), works very well. Dec. 12 people found this review helpful. Great design by Larry three important aspects of this device: 1) Does not require an external power supply! Comes with Y-USB adapter that supports two USB ports (which should be reasonably close) to the power and data 2) Includes a copy of CyberLink Power DVD 9. The software is "meh", but $ 100 of value (Ultra Edition need to play Blu-Ray) comes with hard makes it much more attractive. 3) style than other external drives. Comes with optional mounting bracket for the vertical, as shown in the table. External light blue light can be controlled by software. Overall worth the price. Side note: Amazon delivery was amazing. You can also burn Blu-ray Disc by Lee Asus Blu Ray This was perhaps one of my purchases more expensive but worth it. The only problem is that PowerDVD 9 that comes with it is a piece of crap bloatware I recommend using DaPlayer. Free software is a Blu Ray game that is constantly updated and works well. It looks good and works well. (In Windows 7 at least. I have not heard anything about the Mac and do not know how it works under Wine on Ubuntu Linux.) See all 34 reviews ....

I could not care less function DVD burning, I was watching the movie. First (and as is normal with other players), you must purchase a software player, so expect 59% of spending $ 100 for a Blu-ray software like WinDVD or PowerDVD MediaTheater. Secondly, and this was the most difficult, the reader is provided with latest firmware, and the reference Phillips did not help at all. 1) This device is not to say what brand it is 2) You will not be able to find references on Google that refer to a firmware upgrade 3) No comment or post it to learn about the topics of the firmware for this model, it is a Lite on the unit, and while the drive is not listed, there is a utility that is able to eject the disc to detect, check the latest firmware, automatically update the firmware (and check for updates )[..] time to time if I do not find firmware, I rated it two stars for being able to read and write DVD and another to work with Blu-ray data. As it is, it works perfectly, but it's 4 stars for the huge hassle it was to find and update the firmware. Look at Windows 7, when the program run, it will not work. But if you exit the program will detect Windows 7 was not properly installed, and a number of changes. James Eastman, it is what it says it is. A plug-and-play external drive, the CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray will read. I have not really put it to the test, but plug in and I made sure it would be a Blu-ray, it definitely did not read. It comes with a generic CD-R with a trial version of some Blu-ray playback software, which I have not and probably will not install. The front part to the hard drive I got very badly placed on the tray. The right side is connected at all, making it easy to accidentally turn it back when you pull out the tray. Due to the fact that the right side is not connected, it can also be somewhat vertically misaligned with the drive, so it is difficult to close the drawer. Finally, the outside of the drive smells like cigarette smoke. If you need an affordable, portable Blu-ray drive, the drive works.
